Messy neighbors can be a real stinker. While people have the right to behave any way they want within the comforts of their own apartment as long as it doesn't effect you, little things neighbors do still tow the line from time to time. People who talk or laugh incredibly loudly who live next door can be annoying, but it’s a tough thing to request someone generally speak more quietly. Not picking up their mail or newspapers in front of the door to their apartment can also be obnoxious, as it can spill over into your entryway. But what can you really do about it?
Messy neighbors are another one of these foibles that walks a fine line. While they can be as messy as they want within their apartment, it may start to effect your way of life in the future. For example, if they leave trash out on a regular basis, it’s only a matter of time before rats and insects show up. There are a number of things that you can do if you have messy neighbors and they are listed below.
Ask Them Nicely
If your messy neighbors are leaving trash out, ask them nicely to take care of it and even help them to throw it away. This will be a one time courtesy showing that you understand people get busy sometimes and don’t have the time to clean up after themselves. If that’s the case, they will be embarrassed by it and not let it happen again. If they are just slobs and don’t care, than this may just be an exercise in futility.
Take Pictures of the Mess
Pictures are a key thing to have if this messy neighbor problem ever comes to a head. This will be evidence that can help you in the future, and something your landlord can use in their case against the renter if they want to get rid of them. Of course, don’t let your messy neighbor know you are taking pictures as that can start some real neighborly problems.
Leave Them a Nice Anonymous Letter
Craft a letter that lets your messy neighbor know how what they are doing affects the other residents in the building. Don’t be mean, just be honest, and let them know why the mess affects everyone, including them. Ask them kindly to remove it and keep it from happening again so you don’t have to tell the landlord. Do not sign it or let them know you taped it to their door. Passive aggressive? Sure. But it will probably get the problem taken care of without the need of an awkward confrontation. And at the very least, you will know that the messy neighbor will now have an idea that someone around them is aware of their dirty habits.
Call the Landlord
The last option is to call the landlord and complain, as this will force them to talk to the renter so they clean up the mess. No one wants to be a rat, unless of course, it keeps you from having to live with them!
