Colors have always been used to solicit emotional responses from both humans and animals. If you’re getting ready to decorate your new apartment, think about the ways that you can use color to convey different emotions and feelings in each room. Find out how decorating with color can affect a person emotionally and sometimes physically. Perhaps you’ll also discover why certain colors are your favorites!
Red is the warmest of all colors: It’s associated with heat, love and comfort, and it symbolizes action, confidence, passion, courage, life, survival, passion, lust and vitality. Red can also be an intense color that creates feelings of excitement, intensity, danger or even anger. If you like red, you’re probably an extrovert. Using red in the home can increase your enthusiasm, interest and energy. It can also subconsciously create confidence and help you get over fear and anxiety.
Orange is a power color. It’s not a good color to use in a kitchen if you’re on a diet as it is said that it increases the craving for food. Orange symbolizes enthusiasm, creativity, warmth, play, endurance and vitality. If your favorite color is orange, you’re probably a curious person who loves to explore new things. People who like the color orange are most often caring and honest. Orange is a dynamic color and can be used in a similar manner, for similar purposes as red, yet it is not as harsh. Orange can be used in a room to increase creativity, provide levity and create action.
Yellow is a color that is great for kitchens as one of the properties of the color is to increase metabolism. Yellow symbolizes happiness, joy, wisdom, intellectual energy and it brings clarity and awareness into a room. It is cheery and warm, but be careful of the shade that you use when decorating with it. Since yellow reflects a high amount of light, it is the color that is most fatiguing to the eye. Bright or mustard shades of yellow can also generate feelings of frustration and anger. It has been noted that babies tend to cry more and people are more likely to lose their tempers in yellow rooms. In a room, yellow can help sharpen memory and concentration skills, help make better decisions, cheer you up, provide relief from tiredness, panic or exhaustion and help with creative projects.
If you’re a big nature buff, go green! It symbolizes nature, self-respect, life, tranquility, good luck, fertility, health, learning, growth, transformation, money, harmony, well-being and, on the negative side, jealousy. Green can be used in decorating to create balance in a room. Green can help improve reading ability, relieve stress and help in the healing process, both emotionally and physically. In a room, green can be calming, help provide the impetus for change or growth and help protect against fear and anxiety.
Yes, blue can bring about feelings of sadness but it is also the most calm, serene and soothing color. If you’re dieting, eat from a blue plate, as the color is one of the least appetizing colors. For that reason, decorating your kitchen in floor to ceiling blue probably isn’t the best idea. Research has shown that people are the most productive when working in a blue room, subsequently, you may see many offices that paint work areas this color. Blue represents youth, spirituality, sincerity, inspiration, tranquility, order and peace. Pure blue is soothing and has been proven to help lower the pulse and body temperature. Blue in the home is relaxing, will help you become open to learning new things and will aid in communication.
The color purple is magical and mysterious. It has been used to symbolize royalty and it represents wisdom, spirituality, inspiration and imagination. In decorating, a bright purple color can be used for rich contrast for an exotic mood while a lighter purple is more romantic and delicate. In the home, purple will help bring peace of mind and good judgment.
Pink isn’t just for girls. The color pink is calming and soothing. Pink symbolizes love, romance and beauty. Prisons often use the color pink on walls to calm inmates and sports teams will paint the locker rooms of visiting teams pink to hopefully instill passiveness and decrease competitive energy. Research has proven that this calming effect of the color is purposeful only with the initial exposure. Extended contact with the color will actually produce the opposite effect, agitation. For this reason, bathrooms or sun rooms (places that you don’t spend extended time in) are great when decorated in the color pink.
Brown is comfy. The color symbolizes the earth, convention, strength and reliability. Brown has been known to stimulate the appetite, so if you’re not on that diet, brown in the kitchen would be magnificent. Brown is strongly associated with nature and in a room will set a tone of warmth, comfort and security. Brown is a great color to use as the primary color in a room with others as accent colors. Brown is also a strong color but in excess may create feelings of depression and isolation. Use brown in rooms that have natural themes or in rooms in which you need to create a sense of organization.
In actuality, white isn’t really a color, it is the combination of all colors. In nature, sunlight is created from the 7 major colors and can be seen when separated in a rainbow. For these reasons, white symbolizes wholeness and completion. White also is associated with purity, cleanliness, innocence, kindness, loyalty and truth. White can be used in a room to create the illusion of a larger space, but as you might know, if a room is completely white, it can seem empty and unfriendly.
Personally speaking, I think black has had a bad rap. Although it’s dark and moody, symbolizing death, mourning, menace, unhappiness, the unknown, formality and evil, let’s face it, the color black can also be classy and sophisticated. Native Americans believed that black was a positive color as it was the color of life giving soil. In Ancient Egypt, black represented life and rebirth. And what woman doesn’t have a “little black dress” or doesn’t understand the slimming benefits black brings? Black is sophisticated and mysterious. Use black in the home to provide a contrast to a lighter color, it can also be used to conceal imperfections.
Native Americans believe that the color gray represents friendship. Although it can be a gloomy color, it’s good to use as a base color in decorating with brighter colors as accents as it has a cooling effect and can mute an otherwise “loud” shade. It is a true neutral and can be paired up with any other color. Gray is restful and symbolizes security, neutrality, maturity, responsibility, practicality and dependability.
Although you’ll probably not want to paint an entire room gold, there are some aspects to the color that would affect anyone in a positive manner. Gold symbolizes wealth, prosperity, good health, success and wisdom. If gold is your favorite color, you’re probably a very optimistic person. Use gold accents in rooms to increase your personal power, to relax and enjoy life and to bring about success, happiness and good health.

My carpet and walls are cream color. Someone said you should choose your drapes by the same or maybe a little darker than your floors and walls. Is this true. Do you have any suggestions as to a color and fabric I should use at my windows. By the way I like this section of decoration cleaning and tidbits.
Diana, there’s really no rule about choosing the color for your drapes. But think about it this way, the lighter the drape, the more light will be let in. If you like a bright room, a lighter color drape would be best for you. The opposite for a dark drape. If you like both, you can do a lighter liner with a heavier or darker valance or swag. Think about the overall color scheme you want in your room. Just make sure you don’t clash!
My upholstered sofa and chair are a dark brown and I need to keep them for now. My woodwork is painted white (includes a fireplace and built in bookcases) and I have a light beige carpet. I want to change my wall color. I’m thinking a taupe or gray – any suggestions? How about accent piece colors? Thanks for your help.
This has really been an inspirational article. No where have I seen such intense study of color and the meanings/feelings associated with them. I truly appreciate this article and hope my new landlord will agree with you and your suggestions. Thank You very Much Indeed. Rosa
I really enjoyed reading the different rooms that you can paint by color…. that is kinda strange that I ran into this website, when I began to pick colors for my living room I didn’t have any idea what color I was going to use, so I told my hisband let’s try pink and see what it will look like when we get done with it well I’m here to say that we both love the color and it also goes with my furniture that I have and it is a multi-color and it has a lot of pink, burgundy, green and many other colors and it is perfect… and we are so glad that we decided to use the pink color…. Thank you for sharing the colors on the internet….
Vernita
This is great stuff. Thanks for this information. Now I have a better understanding of what colors to paint my walls, what curtains and linens to buy and which colors bring out the best in people.
WOW lol my bathroom is pink and my boys room is blue and that goes with the color chart now it just helps me choose what to paint the rest of the house thank goodness lol
i tink your right about the color yellow its in my kitchen and its a wonderful color it brings alot of peace joy and happiness to lif inside the kitchen
I think that you site is very helpful and I am glad I looked at this before I started shopping for my new apartment. Thank you
Diana, you should choose a goldish color. I think that would bring the cream color out.
Hi I recently moved into a new apartment and I am now confused about something. I love blue… it’s my favorite color, however, I want to do my kitchen in sunflowers and blue backgrounds is that so bad? Also want ideas on how to flow this color into the living room but not make it so yellow or so blue? Help!!! How do I do this?
I am in love with the SOUTHWEST theme. The golds, browns, reds, black.these themes im wanting for my living room which would extend into the bathroom. Would ou happen to have any suggestions as far as the base wall colors to start my SW theme and furnishing ideas? Any and all help in getting satrted would be appreciated. Signed Sir Desperate.
Melanie–I think sunflowers and blue backgrounds are a great combination! Yellow and blue usually look good together IMO, and one being energetic while the other is calming seems like it would create a good balance.
As for using the colors in other rooms, if you want it to be “not so yellow or so blue,” you could tell the paint store salesperson that you’d like a color that’s the same “hue” but a lower “saturation.” Basically this means that it’s like the exact same color but with grey mixed in (light grey* if it’s a light color, dark grey if it’s a dark color). Or you could do something where you got the same color and toned it down yourself, like sponge-painting yellow or blue onto a base coat of light grey*, but try this out on a piece of white posterboard or something like that before you do it to your walls to see if it turns out how you want it.
(*Beige will work instead of light grey if you want a warmer color scheme.)
As my dining room is an alcove off my living room and thereby shares the bay window what is your suggestion for color of curtins/shades/blinds, etc., I have not decided what of the three I will use. My main color of living room is 2 shades of blue (periwinkle blue and a dark teal blue) and the main color of my dining room while not yet decided has a table/chairs/dresser in light oak and white. The dresser and white portion of the chairs is destined to be painted originally white but I am flexible if it helps incorporate the two rooms. In addition when seated in the dining room you can see my kitchen which is using yellow as its primary color. For clarity, questions are “What color for bay window and what color for the chairs and dresser that I am planning to paint”. Thank you for any suggestions. Also must the two room match because of the bay windows placement.
My wall in all the rooms are white (help)what to do even my kitchen and it looks dark even when i open the curtain tell my what colors to use my favorite is red but i wouldn’t want no red walls.
hi, i have recently rented an apartment and somehow have ended decorating my living room in the shades of brown. although brown is a neutral color, it has given a bland theme to the room. can anyone suggest a color to combine with it so that my room can provide a warm and lively atmosphere. would really appreciate suggestions. thanks and have fun decorating ur homes
Well me personaly i think that the carpet does stand out more than enough. i dont think the drapes have to match the carpet. Be creative and do the unimaginable. It always works
This is great stuff. I never thought choosing the right color would be so easy. Thanks for all the tips!!:]
Depending on the shade of brown red or even a yellow would look really nice. Just a thought.
Hey i cant find a color for my living room, any suggestions?
I just moved into a new 2/2 condo on the harbor with huge windows and sliding glass doors.Im having a difficult time decorating. Not one room in the entire condo is square. EVERY room is extremely odd shaped! All the walls are white, blinds are tan, and carpet and tile are tan. Its very blah! I have all dark furniture! Any suggestions would be appreciated! PLEASE help!

My question is actually, will the landlord / landlady actually let you paint the apartment? I am about to move into a townhome which has a cream colored paint scheme, but I would like to paint my daughter’s room. I have some wonderful ideas for it. I have only spoke to the landlord a few times, and this is not a question that I would have ever thought to ask. I figure that the answer would be a definite “NO”. I really would love to do some painting in there. I dont mind if there is an extra deposit, or if I have to repaint it when I leave. I plan to be there for a while so i want to make it feel like home.
I am painting a wall that flows from my living room into the dining room a deep red. There are lots of windows and I am unsure of what color of drapes to use besides white or cream? Any suggestions?
I am painting a wall that goes from my dining room into my living room. I also have a chair rail up and I have baby blue carpet. I need some ideas on paint color. Please help I would like to paint soon. Thanks
My living room has hardwood flooring with white walls…what would be the best color to paint the walls? I want an inviting area for company. This is my first place on my own and am no expert on decorating.
My wall color is light cream. which color can i combine with it for my unborn baby girl?
What a great article! Helped me solidify some of my own feelings about different colors. My BEDROOM is in browns/black/gold with some turquoise accents. Furniture is dark, like a mahogany, and feels very elegant. I LOVE being in there, it feels SO relaxing.
im about to move out with my husband and i want to decorate my apartment to were it seems relaxing and cool
so any ideas for color or decorations
THANKS!The article was great and on time considering I’m in the process of moving into my new apartment and don’t have a clue on a color scheme. KUDOS 2 YA
What an awesome article. So much information in each little paragraph. WOW. I am fasinated with colors and enjoy talking about them. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
I would like to know what apartment complex will let you paint the walls? I’ve never found one that would. Thanks. Another question, my couch is a light gold along with the chair and I have a red loveseat. The walls are ivory and the carpet is beige. They are all solids. I have a large window and I can’t decide on the color of curtains I should go with and should it be a solid or a floral? Again, thank you.
I’m trying to figure out what color or colors that are relaxing for each room and the purpose of each room. I’m tired of sleeping in a room that doesn’t have that early crisp way that of creeping in when it’s needed. I like color but not too extreme in the color. Nothing that pops out and you can’t help not to stare at it. It should be calming and inviting. Hopefully with your help we can come up with a perfect salution for our first purchase of our own home. Thank-you for sharing your wonderful ideas and for help. I have a problem & only in this house of raising up early enough to do anything outside of our home.
Instead of taupe or grey, with your beige carpet and brown sofa, I would go for something warmer. Try tan walls, then red drapes, hot pink accents and some brass pieces.
most shades of blue look really pretty with brown. I have a more grayish blue in my room with chocolate brown and it is very nice. relaxing.
Some floral curtains with red, gold and green on a beigh or cream ground would be nice . If you get a few accent pillows that play off the red and green that would make your room pop.a few plants would liven up the space as well and tie in with the floral curtains.Best of luck,
Gina
This is an informative article and has helped solidify my decision in using brown and green to paint my apartment.
There is one thing I have an issue with though. The “white” paint paragraph is incorrect. White LIGHT is the combination of all colors; it’s bright and reflective. White PAINT is the absence of all color and harshly reflects the light in a room making it seem desolate, empty, harsh and bigger than it actually is (which can create an off-set – especially when going to buy furniture).
I recently moved into an apartment for the first time, from a very stressful atmosphere, where I felt I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I found that what I wanted and needed was calm, serene, soothing surroundings. I found I could accomplish this best with an odd combination of eggshell and robins egg blue. I want the rooms to look larger than they are, with plenty of room, and no clutter. Anything to escape stress. I feel I am accomplishing this with mostly eggshell with touches of the robins egg blue, using throw pillows, etc. If anyone has other suggestions, I would appreciate it.
