Should I Have a Roommate Agreement?

Rental Agreement

Whether your roommate is a stranger on move-in or a lifelong friend, it’s a good idea to have a roommate agreement. Setting down the terms of your agreement in writing doesn't mean that you don’t trust each other or that you’re expecting problems—it helps to avoid problems by making sure everyone is on the same page and getting issues out on the table that one or both of you may not have considered. And, in the event that problems do arise, having a written agreement will avoid conflicting claims about who was responsible for what and so allow you to resolve those issues more quickly and easily. You can find free templates for roommate agreements online, but don’t just print one out and sign it. Make sure that you review it carefully with your roommate and that you make any changes necessary to reflect your actual agreement.
